Ipswich Town full-back Leif Davis signs new four-year contract to keep him at Portman Road until the summer of 2028

Ipswich Town have revealed full-back Leif Davis has signed a new four-year contract with his existing deal having been due to expire next summer.

The 24-year-old has been a key figure in the Blues completing back-to-back promotions to reach the Premier League and has been an ever-present in Kieran McKenna’s side so far this season, leading to calls for his inclusion in the England squad.

SuffolkNews’ media partners TWTD understand contract talks have been ongoing with the Newcastle-born player ‘since before Christmas’.

Although his current deal was set to expire at the end of this season, the club did hold the option for an additional year on a player they signed under Paul Cook from Leeds United in the summer of 2022 for a reported £1 million plus a further £500,000 in top-ups.

Davis, who is just two appearances away from reaching his century of outings for the Suffolk club, having contributed five goals and 36 assists, told Town’s website: "I am really pleased to have signed a new contract.

"I have loved my time at the club so far and have improved so much during my two seasons here working with this group of players and under a manager who has done so much for me.

"This feels like home now and I am excited to continue the journey."

Davis set a new record for assists for a defender while in the Championship last season, with his 18 eclipsing the 14 of both Kieran Trippier (Burnley, 13/14) and Barry Douglas (Wolves,17/18). And manager McKenna has revealed his delight at seeing him put pen to paper on a new long-term deal at Portman Road.

"We are all delighted that Leif has committed his future to the club,” he said.

“Leif has made huge strides over the last two-and-a-half seasons and has developed well, both as a player and as a young man.

"He has been an important part of the successes of the last two seasons and now has the opportunity to play regularly in the Premier League for the first time in his career.

"We are excited to have the opportunity to work with him for an extended period and are confident he will continue to work hard to improve and develop in all areas."
