See how Ipswich Town's Portman Road Stadium has changed over the years

Aerial photos of the change in landscape surrounding Portman Road have been released, demonstrating the changes Ipswich Town's historic ground has undergone over the years.

Historic England have unveiled thousands of photographs, showing how Suffolk and the rest of the country has developed over time.

Having first opened in 1884, Portman Road has undoubtedly undergone numerous change over the last 137 years. The photographs, though, show it has always retained its character and history.

The oldest picture on the database is from 1933, with appears to be one solitary stand, known as the 'Chicken Run', where the Cobbold Stand now sits.

The circular perimeter around the pitch shows how Portman Road was used in different ways. Before the club eventually turned professional, the ground was previously for whippet racing, cricket and rugby.

This picture from 1938 shows a distant view of how the ground was slowly starting to develop.

As Ipswich started develop and move on from the war, redevelopment work at Portman Road gathered pace.

Looking from beyond the railway station, this picture from 1949 shows terracing now in the north and south area of the stadium.

The 'Chicken Run' also appears to have been extended, with records showing seats were added in the late 1930s.

By 1962, Portman Road was completed with stands on all four sides of the ground.

Town competed in the inaugural season of the Premier League in 1992, and the first picture on the database showing Portman Road in colour is from the same year.

Although the ground and the surrounding area had been mordernised, terracing still remained in parts of the ground.

Tiers had not yet been added onto the now-Sir Bobby Robson Stand and Sir Alf Ramsey Stand.

The most recent pictures on the Historic England database is from 2008.

By this point, redevelopment work to both the Sir Alf Ramsey Stand and Sir Bobby Robson Stand had been completed, and the area surrounding the ground looked vastly different.

The Blues are now looking to make further adjustments to Portman Road, with plans submitted to Ipswich Borough Council earlier this year.
