Ipswich Town: Number of late calls to be made on Blues players ahead of Wolves clash at Portman Road
There are a number of late fitness calls to be made on Ipswich Town players ahead of their huge clash with Wolves at Portman Road tomorrow (3pm) in a battle for Premier League survival.
The Blues secured their first league win of 2025 on Wednesday with a 2-1 victory over Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium.
Kieran McKenna’s side, who currently sit 18th in the table, head into tomorrow’s fixture nine points behind 17th-placed Wolves, with only eight games left of the season.
Key duo Leif Davis (leg) and Omari Hutchinson (hamstring) both missed the midweek match against the Cherries, with the latter picking up his issue in training after returning from international duty with England U21s.
The pair have not been ruled out of being in the squad to face Wolves.
Speaking on the fitness on his side, McKenna said: "There's nothing new from the other night, which is a bonus. Everyone who played the game came through the game.
"In terms of availability we'll be leaving some decisions until tomorrow.
“We had players who played a little bit more than what we would have wanted the other night, it was a physical game and we've got players coming back from injury.
"It's going to be late judgements on how everyone is tomorrow before we make final decisions.
"There are a lot of players in that camp and you can put both Leif and Omari in there."
McKenna said Kalvin Phillips came through his 10 minutes or so off the bench fine, despite having had more than 20 stitches to a foot injury, following the 4-2 loss to Nottingham Forest before the international break.
The Blues boss said: “He hadn't trained in the build-up to the game.
“I have to say credit to him as well for being available and making himself available for the squad, not having really had any football, but being there if we needed to get a result over the line and he helped us do that.
“It's good he was able to do that and he hasn't had any big reaction.”
Both Wes Burns (knee) and Chiedozie Ogbene (Achilles) remain long-term absentees.
McKenna hasn’t been able to name the same team for two games running yet this season.
When asked about injuries over the course of the campaign, he said: “There are other criteria as to why we pick the team, but I think it's known that we've had pretty extenuating circumstances.
“I'm not sure how many times we could have picked the same team in terms of availability.
“We've tried for periods of the season to be consistent in certain units of the team and tried to build relationships as well as we can, but usually that process has been disrupted one way or another, so that's been a challenge.
“Everyone who played on Wednesday night is fit and available again, but it's a quick turnaround after a physical game, so we'll make the right decisions about what we think for the team to start and the right decisions for the team to come on.”
