Ipswich Town: Wales manager Rob Page confirms Wes Burns hamstring injury and Cameron Burgess makes Australia debut

Wales manager Rob Page has confirmed that an Ipswich Town winger has withdrawn from the national squad due to injury.

Page revealed that Wes Burns pulled a hamstring during his side’s 0-0 friendly draw with South Korea in Cardiff on Thursday.

The 28-year-old came on as a substitute in the 60th minute and won his fifth cap - as did Town teammate Nathan Broadhead - at the Cardiff City Stadium.

On Burns’ injury, the Welsh boss said at a press conference before his side’s Euro 2024 qualifier against Latvia: “Wes came on and he’s tweaked his hamstring.

“We’ve got a duty of care to the player and for the club as well, so I think it was too risky to bring him. He’s pulled his hamstring, so it’s best off to send him back.”

Page said he always feared that the friendly against South Korea might lead to players having to drop out.

He said: “We can’t wait for it, we’re looking forward to it, we’re off the back of a positive performance against Korea.”

“I didn’t want the game because I didn’t want to risk injuries. We’ve picked up an injury from that game.

“But there were lots of positives to come out of it, so it was beneficial exercise but I always had one eye on the most important thing, which is this one.”

Town defender Cameron Burgess also made his debut for Australia in their 2-2 draw with Mexico last night.

The 27-year-old played the full 90 minutes for the Socceroos alongside Leicester City’s Harry Souttar, in front of 50,000 fans at the AT&T Stadium in Dallas, Texas.

Manager Graham Arnold praised the centre-back’s performance and said: “I thought he did very well.

“It’s his first international and the first time he’s ever played beside Harry Souttar or any of the other boys, so I thought he fitted in very well.”

The Tractor Boys will look to build on their strong start to the season as they face Sheffield Wednesday in an away fixture on Saturday, with kick-off at 3pm.
