Ipswich Town boss Paul Lambert deserves credit for the victory over Bristol Rovers
Well this is a familiar feeling. Ipswich Town find themselves top of the pile in September again after a perfect start in the league and confident of continuing in this reign.
You don’t need me to remind you how the last campaign went, with The Tractor Boys storming the league up until November before falling way off the pace in the new year and finishing, well, in an unacceptable fashion. So let’s just enjoy the start we’ve made to this season.
Saturday’s 2-0 victory over Bristol Rovers was a decent one and a game where we always looked the better side. The hosts made it difficult and Town were made to fight for 70-odd minutes before a lucky break with an own goal and some quality from Jon Nolan made sure the three points would travel back down to Suffolk.
Now, If you know me and read this column regularly, then you’ll be well aware that Mr Paul Lambert certainly wouldn’t be on my Christmas card list and I can’t say I’m a huge admirer of the former canary. But, I must give him credit for his substitutions and tactics on Saturday, which got us the victory and made sure the job was done.
It would be so easy to get ourselves carried away again, like we did last season and believe me, I’m keeping my feet well and truly on the ground. That said, with a run of winnable fixtures coming up you do have to think that Lambert’s side could and should be adding maximum points more often than not.
Rochdale are the visitors to Portman Road this weekend and I think I speak for all Tractor Boys and Girls when I say I’m expecting nothing but three points.
Dale, who struggled last season and were actually beaten by Town 1-0 last November, will come into this one as underdogs but will take positives from the 0-0 draw they had with promotion favourites Portsmouth last Sunday.
Let’s hope we continue the winning streak and ‘get the job done’ again this weekend.
