Ipswich Town need to strengthen at full-back during January transfer window
Happy New Year! I think we’ll all agree that waving goodbye to 2020 will be most welcomed.
As we enter January, it was strange not to be down at Portman Road over the festive period or at least be able to listen or watch the Tractor Boys in action.
The current situation which finds us all in Tier 4 seems to have affected most of us, none more so than the Ipswich Town camp, with over 10 unnamed players with the virus and manager Paul Lambert currently isolating with it too.
I wish them all well with their recovery and hopefully we can see Town back playing (and winning) again soon.
It’s easy to forget with everything going on that the transfer window is about to open with the opportunity now to really go and strengthen what seems a forever suffering squad.
Now we’d all be silly if we thought Marcus Evans was going to get the cheque book out and spend millions, but he must see this squad needs some help, whether it be short or long term, just to supply a little cover.
So, where do I think we need to strengthen? Well if we start from the back, although I can’t say I’m particularly enthused by either of our goalkeepers, it’s a case of ‘they’ll have to do’.
For me, we need to address our defence, especially in the full-back area. Stephen Ward has done OK since coming in but as the season has gone on, he’s looked more and more tired and you just never know when he’s going to fall down injured again.
With players set to return in the midfield area both centrally and wide, we’ll be OK there, so we must also explore another avenue up top, with not one of our senior strikers particularly setting the world alight so far. If 4-3-3 is the formation, we need the right man up front to make it all happen.
With Town now entering the ‘business end of the season’, now is the time for Paul Lambert and his men to start doing the business on and off the pitch.
