Ipswich Town manager Paul Cook may have to sacrifice his own philosophy in the short term to find winning formula

Death, taxes, and Ipswich letting you down. The only three things we can ever be guaranteed in life, or so it seems.

Following three points against Plymouth, we went into Tuesday’s game against Fleetwood full of confidence and optimism.

As I kicked off the Talking Town Matchday show we were aware Lincoln were losing and, as fans, we forgot ourselves.

A win against Fleetwood and a game in hand would make third suddenly look catchable.

However, it took only 10 minutes for Town to burst that bubble when they allowed Fleetwood an unmarked header to take a 1-0 lead. The remaining 80 minutes were not any better and we were second best throughout. I’d even argue third best behind the officials.

We never got going and when Stephen Ward replaced Myles Kenlock in a like for like change, I should have switched off the iFollow service there and then. Unfortunately, it was a live YouTube watchalong, so I couldn’t!

A total lack of plan B shone through and I can only imagine the reaction on my live full-time show had that been a Paul Lambert substitution.

So where now for Paul Cook and his Ipswich side?

The first thing he must do is find out what this squad is good at and FAST, even if that goes against his own philosophy in the short term.

Even in the two positive games, we never looked convincing.

We currently sit just outside the play-offs with TWO games in hand and only one point off. That is bonkers and shows that everything is still to play for, but we need good ol’ Big Mo (momentum). That’s the key now; find a formula, get a little run of wins and build a momentum to head into the business end of the season.

Portsmouth on Saturday (1pm) is a huge game and in the dugout will be new manager Danny Cowley. A man wanted by many Town fans to replace Lambert.
