Ipswich Town hit the bar twice in goalless draw with Vincent Kompany's Championship leaders Burnley in FA Cup fourth round tie
Ipswich Town will be in the hat for the fifth round (last 16) of the Emirates FA Cup on Monday – but they will have to overcome Championship leaders Burnley in Lancashire to play in it after a goalless draw at Portman Road.
It was far from a backs-to-the-wall display against Vincent Kompany's higher-league side though with the Suffolk side hitting the crossbar at opposing ends of both halves, through Marcus Harness and then in added time through Conor Chaplin.
The excellent Kayden Jackson also went close to the breakthrough in the 82nd minute but his shot was thwarted by a lunging block by Charlie Taylor.
Burnley had their moments too with Rodriguez firing over when well placed in the area in the first half while Vaclav Hladky had to tip over a second-half effort from Nathan Teller.
It was Town's first appearance in the fourth round of the competition since 2010, having overcome non-league outfits Bracknell Town and Buxton ahead of dispatching relegation-threatened Championship side Rotherham United at Portman Road in the third round.
Championship leaders Burnley, who are five points clear of Sheffield United and 18 from third-placed Watford, arrived in Suffolk in blistering form, having won their last league matches. They only tasted defeat twice in their last 16 in all competitions.
Both managers rotated their squads for the tie with McKenna making eight changes from Tuesday's 4-0 home win against Morecambe with just midfield pairing Sam Morsy and Lee Evans remaining in the starting line-up alongside centre-back George Edmundson.
As expected, Vaclav Hladky retained his FA Cup spot in goal with Janoi Donacien, Luke Woolfenden, Kayden Jackson, Greg Leigh, Sone Aluko, George Hirst and Marcus Harness also coming in.
There was no place in the allowed 20-man squad for Harry Clarke (cup-tied), Wes Burns (calf), Richard Keogh and Leif Davis.
Kompany made seven changes from Burnley's 2-1 home win against West Brom last Friday with Belgium Under-21 international centre-back Ameen Al-Dakhil handed his debut with fellow January window signings Lyle Foster and Hjalmar Ekdal on the bench.
It was lower-league Town who flew out of the traps with Hirst stabbing wide from a low Jackson cross inside two minutes before Bailey Peacock-Farrell rushed out of his area soon after to clear another of the forward's low deliveries.
The Blues continued their early assault with Harness seeing an effort from just inside the area clip the top of the crossbar in the fifth minute after the ball broke loose while Peacock-Farrell fisted a Leigh cross off the head of Hirst following his own lapse pass.
Burnley began to settle into a passing rhythm and created a glorious chance to take the lead in the 19th minute but Rodriguez fired over on the angle after skipping inside Donacien having worked his way into the left-side of the area after a neat link-up with Darko Churlinov.
Former MK Dons man Scott Twine did get his 30-yard free kick on target a few minutes later but it went comfortably into the arms of Hladky.
Chrulinov got in around the back of the Town defence after a good run on the half-hour mark but Donacien was on hand to block the shot from Rodruiguez from the cut-back.
A couple of minutes later Peacock-Farrell had to tip a deflected Jackson cross over his crossbar while Leigh headed wide following the subsequent short corner routine.
The Blues continued a bright spell of pressure with Donacien's floated pass over the top finding the run of Hirst who got into the box before losing control as he slipped.
A very encouraging half for the hosts ended with Harness pouncing on another loose Burnley pass just outside the area but the defence managed to win the ball back.
Burnley started the second half on the front shot with Hladky having to produce an arcing save to push Nathan Teller's shot over his bar before beating away a half volley from Rodriguez before he confidently came to claim the follow-up ball into the box.
Up the other end the Blues earned a corner with Woolfenden's back-post flick towards goal too weak to trouble Peacock-Farrell.
With Morsy charging him down, Twine saw a low effort go wide before both managers opted to make triple substitutions as the game approached the hour mark.
McKenna changed up his attacking options with top scorer Conor Chaplin, recent signing Nathan Broadhead and striker Freddie Ladapo all entering the fray.
Kompany quickly followed up his substitutions by introducing big money signing Foster for Rodriguez.
Town were still giving as good as they were getting but without being able to create a meaningful opportunity.
In the 76th minute Edmundson made a good lunging block in the area to cut out a cross before substitute Anass Zaroury sent an angled effort from outside the area past the far post via a deflection.
Hladky had to tip Brownhill's corner over his bar at the back post before the visitors wasted the next one.
January signing Massimo Luongo came on for his second Town debut in the 78th minute, replacing Morsy who was on a booking.
The chance the home crowd had been waiting for arrived four minutes later when Leigh did well to reach the byline and stand up a cross to the far post which fell invitingly for Jackson but Taylor's lunging block denied him.
Jackson's tireless contribution was acknowledged with a standing ovation after he was withdrawn shortly after for Kyle Edwards.
The Blues continued to ask questions with Ladapo's effort blocked from an Evans free kick delivery while Woolfenden headed over a corner as the tie entered four minutes of stoppage time.
In the third minute Chaplin came within a whisker of providing the winner with a shot-cum-cross from the right bouncing off the top of the crossbar having had Pecock-Farrell backtracking before claiming it.
But both sides will have to go again after what was an entertaining encounter ended goalless.
