Ipswich Town manager Kieran McKenna proud of players after FA Cup defeat to Burnley at Turf Moor

Ipswich Town suffered a cruel blow as they were knocked out of the FA Cup by a 94th minute Burnley winner.

After forcing a replay nearly two weeks ago, Kieran McKenna's side put in another resilient display against the Championship leaders at Turf Moor.

George Hirst's first goal in a Town shirt, after Nathan Tella put the home side ahead, ignited the spirited performance, before a last-gasp winner from the Southampton loanee saw Burnley through to the fifth round.

"I thought to a man we were fantastic," said McKenna.

"The away support here on a Tuesday night was a credit to the club, and I thought it was an outstanding performance against a very good team.

"To concede so early on, to show the character that we did then to bounce back and to play the football we did throughout the game, I think it's a performance we can take a lot from. That's the key bit now, what we can take from this."

McKenna made nine changes to the team that drew 1-1 with Cambridge United last time out, but returned to the line-up that faced Burnley in Suffolk.

Vaclav Hladky maintained his position as the cup goalkeeper, while Janoi Donacien, Luke Woolfenden, George Edmundson and Greg Leigh made up the back four.

Cameron Humphreys returned in midfield alongside Sam Morsy, while Marcus Harness, Sone Aluko, Kayden Jackson and George Hirst started in attack.

But Town came unstuck inside the opening moments of the game, as Nathan Tella fired home for the hosts after a scramble in the box.

An inspired Ipswich produced the perfect response just seconds later.

Sone Aluko threaded a beautiful ball down the right-hand side towards Kayden Jackson, who drove into the box before playing a low cross to George Hirst, who found the back of the net for the first time since joining last month.

When asked about the first half performance, McKenna added: "I thought they just caught us out early. The level can just catch you out.

"The response was excellent; the first half performance we went toe-to-toe and had more chances throughout the half. I think there is so much that we can take pride in and be pleased about individually for the players."

Town continued to battle on, but a long ball over the defence evaded the head of Luke Woolfenden and found Tella once more, who volleyed home from inside the box.

"I think the players should have their heads held high, and the fans can go with their heads held high," added McKenna when speaking to iFollow Ipswich.

"It was a good run for the club, but a shame we didn't go further. I think we can be pleased with the progress we showed in the competition."
