Ipswich Town striker Freddie Ladapo on breaking 20-goal barrier and huge League One clash with Plymouth Argyle
Freddie Ladapo is on the hunt to break the 20-goal-a-season barrier for the first time in his career.
The 29-year-old is yet to go beyond that marker in both the non-league pyramid and in the Football League, coming closest with 19 goals at Plymouth Argyle in 2018/19.
He is already halfway there with Ipswich Town this season, having scored 11 so far, with the latest coming on Saturday against Rotherham.
“I certainly hope so,” said Ladapo when asked if this could be the year he breaks down that barrier.
“Even though I’m happy with my contribution, I do want a lot more and I ask a lot more of myself. I hope 20 goals is something I can achieve this season.”
Despite his tally, the striker is still not content with only 11 goals to his name, but is keen to look at his overall contribution to the team.
He said: “I'm never happy and never contented!
"I don't think any striker ever can be if I'm honest with you, but I am happy that I am doing something and it has been a help to the team.
"I've had a help in hand in the games we've played, whether it is scoring or not scoring. I'm very happy with my contribution so far and hopefully I can get a few more.
Having faced one former club in Rotherham in the FA Cup on Saturday, attention for Town now turns to another of Ladapo’s former employers – Plymouth.
Steven Schumacher's men are the current leaders of League One, although they have played a game more than Ipswich in third.
Although the striker spent just one season at Home Park, it is the best of his career season so far.
With plenty riding on the huge clash, it is one that Ladapo is evidently relishing.
"For me, these next couple of weeks are very exciting," he added. "I think for the team especially, it's a chance to test us ourselves and go for the title and get promoted.
"We've been playing very good stuff. I came here to play exciting football and to get another promotion on my CV. We've got 50 points so far and we still have a lot to play for."
