FA Cup round-up: Lowestoft Town hit five past Newmarket Town as Leiston set for replay while Needham Market and Felixstowe & Walton United both suffer exits

Lowestoft Town are the only guaranteed Suffolk non-league side left standing in the Emirates FA Cup heading into the penultimate qualifying round as three of the five sides in action on Saturday suffered defeats.

Jamie Godbold’s Step 3 Trawlerboys cruised through to the third qualifying round though, knocking out lower-league Newmarket Town 5-2 on the east coast with today’s draw throwing up an away tie at the winners of the midweek replay between Haringey Borough and Witham Town.

Travis Cole got Pitching In Southern League Premier Central Lowestoft into an early lead at Crown Meadow on Saturday but the scoreline remained 1-0 heading into the interval.

However, the floodgates opened in the Jockeys’ defence thereafter with Jake Read (56, 68’) and Kyle Haylock (65’) quickly putting the tie beyond the west Suffolk outfit at 4-0.

Summer signing Jose Santa De La Paz did pull one back in the 84th minute but it was followed by Harvey Sayer adding a fifth for the Trawlerboys five minutes later.

A final consolation goal arrived for Michael Shinn’s visitors in the fifth minute of stoppage time via another forward who joined them ahead of the start of their first ever foray into Step 4 in former Cambridge City man Stan Leech.

The county’s only other side who featured in the third round qualifying draw was Lowestoft’s divisional rivals Leiston, following their 2-2 draw away at Brentwood Town.

Chris Wigger and Darren Eadie’s side looked well placed to avoid the need of a reply however, with Jamar Loza’s 59th minute goal having put them into a 2-1 lead which they held until the 89th minute, when Lee Noble provided late joy for the home fans.

The Step 4 outfit had seen Toby Stevenson respond to his sixth-minute own goal by levelling on the half-hour mark for 1-1 at the break.

Should Leiston progress in tomorrow’s replay at Victory Meadow, they would face a home tie with Vanarama National League South (Step 2) outfit Hornchurch.

The third round qualifying ties are set to take place on Saturday, September 28.

Exits for Seasiders and Marketmen

Meanwhile, it was the end of the road in this season’s competition for both Felixstowe & Walton United and Needham Market on Saturday.

Felixstowe had come unstuck in the final 16 minutes of their tie at higher-league Canvey Island with The Gulls breaking the deadlock through Finlay Dorrell before doubling their advantage through the same player to knock out Stuart Boardley’s side.

Needham Market had gone into their entry tie in this season’s competition following two memorable runs – to the first round proper and the fourth qualifying round – in the past two years.

But this time around the journey never got started as fellow Step 2 outfit St Albans City scored three unanswered goals.

The National League South visitors carried a 2-0 lead into the interval and there was to be no way back for Kevin Horlock’s side on what was young striker Seth Chambers’ landmark 100th appearance for the first team, having been with the club since under-16s.
