Suspected attempted murder investigation in Brantham near Ipswich: Woman’s missing jacket and iPhone could hold key to helping police solve investigation

A missing jacket and iPhone could hold the key to helping police solve an attempted murder investigation after a woman was found unconscious with serious injuries on a village track.

The woman, in her 50s, remains in a critical condition in hospital with head and brain injuries after she was found face down on a track in Brantham, near to Rectory Lane, at about 6.30am yesterday by a member of the public.

She had been walking her springer spaniel dog on a route she regularly took, next to the sewage works and railway line, having left her home at about 5am. Her dog was still with her when she was found.

Police are appealing for two items they believe she had which are missing.

They are a pink long sleeved zip through top and an iPhone.

In an interview with SuffolkNews from the scene, Detective Superintendent Mike Brown, head of the joint major investigation team for Norfolk and Suffolk, said: “The focus for me at the moment around the investigation is that the jacket and iPhone could hold key information for us, key evidence, to help us understand what’s happened here.”

He said they were still in the early stages of the investigation and the incident was incredibly rare for Suffolk.

“We are following up a number of lines of inquiry around the investigation to establish how exactly the injuries have occurred,” said Mr Brown.

“The mechanics of the injuries at the moment are still unclear to us and it’s important for us to understand how the victim’s head and brain injuries have been sustained.”

Reassurance patrols are being carried in the area and he encouraged members of the public to engage with officers if there is anything they are concerned about.

He advised anyone out walking alone to be fully aware of their surroundings and to contact police if they see anything suspicious or anyone who causes them concern.
