Ed Sheeran Ipswich gig: Thousands watch surprise performance on steps of town hall

More than 3,000 people watched superstar Ed Sheeran perform a surprise gig in Ipswich town centre.

Crowds gathered to see the singer-songwriter take to the steps of the town hall in Cornhill to play his hits.

He announced on his Instagram page that he was in the town and was going to perform a free gig.

Ed said: "I am in Music World in Ipswich and I have just bought a guitar.

"I am going to go to Ipswich high street by the town hall. I'm going to play a free gig, anyone in Ipswich come on down."

The surprise gig was the result of a collaboration between Ipswich Borough Council and Screen Suffolk.

A spokesperson for the council said the idea was for him to appear to be busking, to create a natural feel.

Ed was only supposed to play a few songs, but ended up staying far longer as crowds built up.

When the gig finished, he gave away his pick and guitar to a member of the audience.
