Monopoly to release special Ipswich edition to mark the game’s 90th anniversary
A special version of Monopoly will focus on Ipswich as the board game marks its 90th anniversary.
Suffolk’s county town beat out nine other locations, including Norwich, to secure an official edition of the popular board game.
An event to mark the announcement will take place at the Cornhill from 10am, featuring gigantic Monopoly money, cards, top hats and more.
The event will be attended by Ben Ladd Gibbon, from Winning Moves UK, Elango Elavalakan, the mayor of Ipswich plus a special appearance from Mr Monopoly.
Mr Ladd Gibbon said Ipswich was selected due to its civic pride and sense of family, believing it ‘ticked every box’ for the competition.
He said: “We are sure we are going to be wonderfully spoiled with choices when putting this Monopoly game together.
“The board will encompass Ipswich’s rich past – from medieval and Tudor times to today and its stunning Waterfront which is a tourist magnet for the town.
“This new version is a new game for a new generation.”
As part of the event, the public will be asked to nominate landmarks that will appear on the board.
Those expected to make an appearance include Ipswich waterfront, Portman Road, The Cornhill and Ancient House.
In the 2025 edition, the game’s three Community Chest places will name different charities.
Last time, Ipswich Town appeared on the pink squares, but Mr Ladd Gibbon said they could end up on the pricier blue squares following their ascension to the Premier League.
A previous Ipswich edition of Monopoly was released in 2006 but was discontinued a few years later.
Nominations will be accepted between 10am today until 11.59pm on March 12.
