Teenager, 18, dies after stabbing in Ipswich Westgate Street, as police continue to investigate
A teenager has died after a stabbing in a Suffolk town centre yesterday afternoon, which officers believe was a targeted attack.
Police were called to Westgate Street, Ipswich, at 3.35pm, following reports of an 18-year-old man being seriously assaulted.
Numerous teams immediately went to search the nearby area, including armed officers and a helicopter from the National Police Air Service – a large cordon was also put in place.
Two males are being sought by police in connection with the incident, who were thought to have left the scene.
One is believed to have headed towards Providence Street, and the other towards the Cornhill.
The crime scene, around JD and Primark, remains closed.
A section 60 order was put in place at 4.59pm.
This will remain in place for 24 hours, and gives officers the right to stop and search without reasonable grounds.
Detective Chief Inspector Matthew Connick said: “This was a brazen attack in the town centre which will have caused great distress to anyone who witnessed it. Whilst enquiries are at an early stage, we believe this to be a targeted attack.
“There will be an increased police presence in Ipswich this evening and over the coming days to provide reassurance to local residents and businesses. We know that many people would have witnessed this attack and we urge you to make contact with us.
Suffolk police are still searching for witnesses.
Any witnesses are asked to contact the Major Investigation Team, quoting reference: CAD 245 of January 17.
