Two men arrested after Vernon Street Ipswich crash where cyclist died




Two men have been arrested after a driver fled the scene of a fatal crash where a cyclist died.

Police were called to Vernon Street in Ipswich just before 10pm last night to reports of a crash involving three cars, a blue Audi, a Red Skoda and a grey Volkswagen, and a bicycle.

Despite the arrival of ambulance crews, including an air ambulance, the cyclist, a man in his 30s, died at the scene.

Police have today revealed the man driving he Audi, who fled the scene after the crash, has been arrested.

Officers attended an address in the Shotley area and, at around 11:25pm, and a man aged in his 20s was detained.

He was initially taken to Ipswich Hospital as a precaution and has since been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and driving whilst unfit through drink or drugs.

He has been taken to custody at Martlesham Police Investigation Centre for questioning.

A second man, also aged in his 20s, was arrested in the Shotley area on suspicion of assisting an offender and obstructing a police officer.

He was also taken to Martlesham Police Investigation Centre for questioning where he remains.

The road remains closed between Stoke Bridge and Wherstead Road while investigations take place.

Officers would like to hear from any witnesses or anyone driving in the area just prior to the incident, who has a dashcam fitted in their vehicle.
