Dog ‘out of control’ in Orwell Country Park in Ipswich put down after police descend on the area
A dog that went ‘out of control’ and allegedly attacked two people and another animal has been put down.
A number of police units, including the Norfolk and Suffolk Roads and Armed Policing Team and a dog handler, were called to Orwell Country Park in Ipswich at 7.20pm last night.
This followed several reports from the public about an animal that was ‘out of control’ in the area.
When they arrived on scene, officers found the dog to be unstable and in extreme distress – and they were unable to bring it under control.
The animal reportedly bit two people and attacked another dog.
Members of the public were present at the scene during the incident, but were moved away shortly afterwards.
The dog was then put down, police reported.
Chief Superintendent Alice Scott from Suffolk Police said: “We understand that this was a highly emotive incident for all those involved – not just those who were attacked and the dog’s owners, but also our officers.
“This was not an action that was taken lightly but was deemed necessary to protect anyone else from being harmed and to prevent further suffering of the dog. Two members of the public have been taken to hospital for treatment to their injuries. The other dog involved also sustained injuries.
“Officers will be conducting additional patrols in the area and members of the public with any concerns about this incident are encouraged to speak to them.”
Officers are keen to speak to any witnesses.
Anyone with information on the incident is urged to contact Suffolk Police on 101 quoting CAD 350 of July 11.
