Ipswich mural to be installed in St Peter's Dock coinciding with Death Awareness Week, run by St Elizabeth Hospice

A new mural detailing what people would most like to do before they die will be installed in Ipswich waterfront.

The art piece, designed to mimic bucket lists, will be placed on a wall in St Peter's Dock, near Dance East, in May.

On the eight-metre mural, members of the public will be encouraged to draw up, or write down, their ambitions of what they'd like to do or achieve before the end of their lives.

Known as the 'Before I Die' project, it was spearheaded by St Elizabeth Hospice, in partnership with Ipswich Borough Council and Art Eat Events.

It comes after the hospice charity was granted funding by the town's Central Area Committee, as part of the 'Compassionate Communities' initiative, designed to break the taboo around talking about death or dying.

The event also coincides with Death Awareness Week, which runs from May 8 to 14.

In addition, the wall will contain a QR code that will point to support services.

The project will last the entire month, a spokesperson for the hospice revealed.

Hugh McElhinney from St Elizabeth Hospice said: “It is a fantastic opportunity for the hospice to be able to bring the initiative to the town.

“This will be a unique way for St Elizabeth Hospice to mark Dying Matters Awareness Week 2023, but also one which we hope will encourage the community to open up conversations with friends and loved ones concerning death and how we can all support one another with death, loss and grief."
