Residents urged to keep cars secure after rise in thefts in Ipswich
Residents are urged to keep vehicles secure as figures show a rise in the number of car thefts in Ipswich.
Figures from Suffolk Police show car thefts in February increased to 57 from 46 in January, mainly in and around the town centre, despite a trend of reduction in recent years.
In addition, the Stoke area alone saw seven thefts on March 5 and 6.
There have also been a number of vehicle interference offences, which sees suspects trying door handles to see if the car is locked.
Trainee inspector Naomi Lofthouse said: “We had seen a decrease in the numbers of such incidents from earlier this year, particularly over the west and east side of Ipswich, however this recent spate shows no-one can be complacent to opportunist thefts, so it is important to make it as hard as possible for criminals.
“In many of the recorded thefts items such a lap-tops, ear pods, games consoles, expensive designer clothing and wallets are being left on show in vehicles.
“Having your car broken into can be very distressing but there are a few steps you can take which will deter thieves and keep your valuables safe.
“We would like to encourage people to report suspicious activity, remain vigilant and revisit the security in place around their vehicles, including vans and tools.”
The force has urged residents to ensure vehicles are locked and to secure anything that may be on the outside of a car or van.
In addition, motorists should not leave any valuables, including mobile phones, wallets and keys, with them and that anything else is hidden from view.
Tradespeople should either ensure tools are removed or kept in a locked container and are clearly marked.
Cars should also not be parked in dimly-lit areas.
Finally, officers urged motorists to ensure catalytic converters are marked and registered and to ask manufacturers whether locks would be possible.
