Ipswich teenager to host a 24-hour radio show in aid of domestic abuse survivors
A teenager from Ipswich is going to host a non-stop 24-hour radio show in aid of charity next month.
Isaak De May, 19, a host at Ipswich Community Radio is raising money for both the radio and Lighthouse Women's Aid.
The show will take place will start on September 17 and will feature hand-picked music, interviews and competitions.
He set up a JustGiving page two weeks ago and is trying to raise £1,000, with half of the proceeds going to the charity and half to the radio station.
Isaak hopes to raise more than this target over the duration of the event, which he feels is an 'excellent cause'.
He said: "I've spoken to Lighthouse and they seem very excited by the idea of me doing the show.
"I wanted to support a local charity and I very much want to highlight the work they do."
He's currently in talks to get them involved in the show in some way.
He wants to bring someone from the charity on during the show to chat about what they do, and why it's important to donate.
Isaak first came into contact with Ipswich Community Radio since 2019, when he was 16.
He added: "I just so happened to stumble upon them when I started.
"I looked into local stations so I could get work experience, and I applied for their training programme.
"Nine weeks later I was hosting my own show."
Isaak typically hosts the Saturday morning show from 11am.
His shows contain a variety of music and interviews.
He hopes to get into radio as a career and will be studying Media Production at De Montfort University in the coming September.
He has helped organise charity events at Ipswich Community Radio in the past.
The most recent of these was a live charity weekend in Rendlesham.
However, this is the first time he's been involved in an event of this size.
Isaak said: "It's really exciting and I'm looking forward to it - it could be fun."
Like with many community radio hosts, Isaak does his show in his free time.
He currently works at Tenpin in Ipswich.
Lighthouse is an Ipswich-based charity that offers help to those suffering under domestic abuse.
It was founded in 1976.
