Mix opens at University of Suffolk in Ipswich waterfront
A new social space and community bar on Ipswich waterfront has opened its doors – and it’s been ‘non-stop’, according to its managers.
Mix opened in the vacant unit at the University of Suffolk’s James Hehir Building, formerly used by Cult Café, last Monday.
The space was opened in a partnership between the University of Suffolk and Access Community Trust, and is a social enterprise with a ‘student focus’, although it is open to all.
But, despite it having only been open for a week, the space has seen footfall from a number of events, including Freshers’ Week and the Ipswich Weekender.
Paul Simon-Swan, the bar manager, said Mix had a nice vibe.
He moved to Kesgrave after years managing bars, clubs and pubs in London – and hoped it would continue to serve the area for years to come.
Paul said: “It’s been crazy, non stop, since we opened with Freshers’ Week and the events on the waterfront over the weekend – drinks were flowing and people were having a great time.
“I love it when things are busy, and so far the bar has been a hit with people. Some evenings it’s been packed.
“After my experience in London, I was hired by Access to help with their new venture.
“We want to offer support and a welcoming space to students and create a safe environment for them to drink and have a good time.”
While the bar has already hired staff to cover its opening, Access Community Trust said it was still looking for roles.
A spokesman for the trust said they want bar staff to be trained as mental health ambassadors, so they can support people when needed.
Cult Café closed in April, and he said the team managed to get everything moved in within four weeks.
He said money made at the bar would go back into helping the community.
Access Community Trust also runs Steam House Café in Carr Street.
The spokesman added: “We’re super excited to develop the partnership with the university.
“While we have a student focus, we welcome anyone from the community – and it’s been very busy since we opened last week with events happening in the town centre.
“Our aim is to create a friendly space for people to visit, and we plan to start hosting events for those struggling with social isolation. We’re also looking forward to supporting the Students’ Union with a range of events.
“Our kitchen also opens tomorrow with a pizza menu, which we hope to expand with feedback.”
