'War of the Worlds' hits open theatre in Christchurch park in Ipswich next week

A musical adaptation of H.G Wells' classic sci-fi novel War of the Worlds will be on view at an open air theatre in Ipswich next week.

Hosted by the Pantaloons theatre company, the show will be available for view at the Mansion Lawn in Christchurch park on Friday, August 26.

Viewers can expect 'puppetry, musical instruments and enthusiasm' to recreate the deadly alien invasion that famously incited panic in New York in 1938.

Food and drink will be unavailable for the event, so showgoers are being encouraged to bring their own picnics.

They are also being encouraged to 'dress for all weathers' as the show takes place out in the open.

Recycling bins will be placed around the park as to avoid excessive waste buildup.

As with most of its outdoor events, Ipswich Borough Council has said dogs will be permitted at the show, but they may be required to be on a lead.

Conversely, unlike most of its events alcohol is permitted at the open air theatre, provided plastic or paper cups are used.

There is also a group booking discount for families to attend the event.

Councillor Sophie Connelly, Ipswich Borough Council Portfolio Holder for Culture and Customers, says: “This year’s Open Air Theatre performance in Christchurch Park, Ipswich by the Pantaloons theatre company is a comic adaptation of The War of the Worlds.

"Four talented actors use musical instruments, puppetry and enthusiasm to entertain crowds on the lawn outside Christchurch Mansion. It’s a wonderful opportunity to experience culture with a difference in a fantastic outdoor setting at the heart of our town.”
