Ipswich Debenhams to close on May 4 with Bury St Edmunds store to follow suit by May 15

Debenhams in Ipswich will close for good in less than two weeks, the high street giant has announced.

The store, in Westgate Street, will close on May 4, making it one of the first 27 in the country to shut its doors. The first wave of store closures will take place on May 2.

Cambridge's Debenhams will also close on May 4.

The official closing date for the Bury St Edmunds store, in the arc shopping centre, is yet to be confirmed, but all stores are due to close by May 15.

The news comes after both stores opened for massive closing down sales earlier this month.

In January it was revealed that all Debenhams department stores would close after the Boohoo Group bought the 242-year-old brand but not its shops.

A spokesman for the company said: “With such great bargains on offer, it’s no wonder our stock is selling out incredibly fast.

"Time is running out for shoppers to take advantage of the incredible discounts being offered at these stores.”
