Firefighters battle blaze at Ipswich takeaway in Upper Orwell Street
Firefighters battled a blaze at a takeaway in Ipswich last night.
Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service was alerted to the incident in Upper Orwell Street at 9pm.
At the height of the incident, five fire engines from Princes Street, Ipswich East, Holbrook, Hadleigh and Needham Market attended as well as an aerial appliance from Ipswich East and the command support vehicle from Woodbridge.
At about midnight, a spokesman said: “Crews worked hard to contain the fire to the building of origin and a neighbouring property.
“We are now scaling down the number of crews at the incident. However, we will be in attendance for some time, with a cordon in place around the area to allow us to work.
“We continue to ask the public to keep away from the area with Upper Orwell Street still closed.”
During the incident, crews requested additional resources as the ground and first floors of the building were affected.
They used 10 items of breathing equipment, four jets, three hose reel jets, an aerial ladder platform and short extension ladder when tackling the fire.
The spokesman thanked Suffolk Police for its support.
