Girls Night Out in Bury St Edmunds, Ipswich Half Marathon, Heritage Open days and more - eleven exciting events in Suffolk this September




Suffolk is full to the brim with rich culture and exciting family days out, and people come from car and wide to entertain its crowds.

From history trips to illusions to marathons, let's discuss what's going on in the county this month.

Ipswich Half Marathon - September 11

One of the largest charity events of the month is the Ipswich half marathon, where runners aim to cross the finish line in aid of a charity of their choice.

Starting and finishing at Russell Road near The Blues' iconic stadium, the race will see runners head down the waterfront, around the River Orwell, down Wherstead Road and along Grafton Way.

Runners come from all backgrounds: some are professionals, others hobbyists, while some see it as a challenge and others run for fun in groups.

Provided you are over 17, you are welcome to sign up.

Ipswich Heritage Open Days Weekend - September 10 to 11

Hosted by the Ipswich Society, this event will open up 25 historically significant buildings in Ipswich to the public.

These range from Medieval Churches to Tudor houses - some opening their doors for the first time in years.

Among these are the rooftop of the iconic Willis Building, designed by Norman Foster, the recently restored historic Tudor home, 4 College Street and Pykenham's Gatehouse, once home to an archdeacon.

Heritage open days like this are happening up and down the country, including in Bury St Edmunds.

Let's Rock Ipswich the Retro Festival at Trinity Park - September 10

The grand finale of the months-long Festival of Suffolk takes place this weekend.

Some of the top artists from the 1980s, including Adam Ant, OMD, Nik Kershaw and more take to the stage at Trinity Park in Ipswich in aid of Child Bereavement UK.

Gates open at 10am and band will rock through until 10.30pm.
The festival is sure to bring back childhood memories for some, or create new ones for others.

Vegan Market - September 18

The bimonthly vegan festival featuring plant-based food and drink from across the county returns to the Ipswich Cornhill on September 18.

Treats up for purchase include vegan doughnuts, pickles, bagels and more.

Its hosts report that entrance is free and dogs are welcome.

Derren Brown at the Ipswich Regent - September 27 onwards

From September 27 to October 1, illusionist Derren Brown will charm audiences at the Regent.

This will be his first theatre performance in six years.

The sponsored walk where participants don bunny ears and pyjamas returns to Bury St Edmunds this weekend.

Admission costs £20 and all proceeds go towards St Nicholas' Hospice Care in the communities of West Suffolk and Thetford.

Last year, more than 600 walkers pledged to take part.

From now until the end of October, visitors or residents wishing to learn more about the rich history of Bury St Edmunds can book tours.

Every day at 11am and 2pm, tours by Bury St Edmunds Association of Registered Tour Guides will share the over 1,000 years of history.

The Real Middle-Earth Tour - September 2 to 9

Anyone who wishes to discover the Anglo-Saxon origins of J.R.R Tolkien's Lord of the Rings trilogy should look no further.

Attendees will get a guided tour of West Stow near Bury St Edmunds by a member of the Tolkien Society.

The event is suitable for anyone 10 years and over, provided they are accompanied by an adult.

The tour lasts for about an hour.

ICE comedy night - September 8

ICE café in Rougham near Bury St Edmunds is launching live comedy nights on September 8, with seven established comedians on the line-up.

The venue is planning further comedy nights every month, with the next scheduled for October 6.

Cyber security Escape Room at Lowestoft Library - September 17

People looking for an informative challenge will be able to take on a cyber security-themed escape room later this month.

Lowestoft Library will be hosting hosting hour-long sessions alongside Norfolk and Suffolk Police to raise awareness over cyber threats.

Entry is free but booking through the library is mandatory.

Art on the Beach - Felixstowe

A new art festival has arrived in Felixstowe.

Art on the Beach features over 40 artists displaying their work, free art activities and a free demonstration tent alongside live music, food and drinks.
