Ipswich Borough Council proposes council tax cuts for low-income households to combat cost of living

A new council tax scheme that will cut bills for thousands of residents is being proposed, a council has said.

Ipswich Borough Council could implement as much as a 100% discount for low-income households to help combat the cost of living crisis.

Over 7,000 people could save anywhere between £2.09 and £26.80 per week.

The council said because of the 'simplicity' of the new scheme, it may significantly reduce administrative costs by up £150,000 a year which would more than pay for the cost of implementing it.

If agreed, it should be in place for the 2023 and 2024 tax bills.

Those receiving a state pension already get the highest level discount through that scheme and this proposal won't change that.

Councillor Bryony Rudkin, Ipswich Borough Council Portfolio Holder for Communities, says: “We know the Cost of Living Crisis is hitting households across Ipswich and this proposal is aimed at providing additional support to some of those in greatest need.”
