Celebrations took place in Ipswich today as it was announced that a new version of Monopoly would focus on the town.

Earlier today, SuffolkNews reported that the county town beat out nine other locations, including Norwich, to secure an official edition of Monopoly.

Coinciding with the game’s 90th anniversary, it is set to hit stores this Christmas – and the people of the town will have a say on what landmarks feature.

Ipswich last featured in a special edition of Monopoly in 2006.

It will be made by Winning Moves UK under licence from Hasbro.

Ben Ladd Gibbon, Winning Moves UK custom games partnership manager said the game would be created for a new generation of fans.

“We chose Ipswich mainly for two reasons - because of its very strong heritage and family-orientated town,” he said.

“Producing a new game is a great opportunity to show off iconic places in Ipswich Town.

“All suggestions sent through via email will be considered, with the number of votes, family favourite locations and iconic places all important factors when choosing the final places on the board.”

Nominations will be accepted between 10am today until 11.59pm on March 12.

Suggestions can be emailed to ipswich@winningmoves.co.uk.

Melanie Willis, communications manager at Ipswich Central Business Improvement District, said a new edition of Ipswich Monoply was great for the town.

It provided an opportunity to highlight was was great about the town and celebrate the present, she said.

Melanie added: “The fact that game producers are asking for nominations for the local streets and landmarks to appear really gets people involved in the creation of this new game for the town.”

“The new version of the game will hit the shops later this year as a great Christmas gift idea.

“I look forward to seeing which Ipswich buildings, streets and places of interest make it onto the board.”

Tom Mumford, the vicar of Ipswich Minster, formerly St Mary le Tower, expressed his excitement at the news.

He said: “It’s wonderful to be chosen on a landmark year for both Monopoly and Ipswich itself, with our church being named a minster earlier this year.

“I hope this is more than just a celebration of our history and heritage and isn’t just done in a way that’s looking back but also inspires us to build a better future.”

Elango Elavalakan, mayor of Ipswich, was thrilled to take part in what he described as a ‘fantastic moment’ for the town.

He said: “This recognition highlights the incredible sense of community, heritage, and civic pride that defines our town.

“We look forward to seeing Ipswich’s landmarks and beloved locations celebrated on the Monopoly board and we hope as many people as possible will get involved by submitting their suggestions.

“Ipswich boasts so many important landmarks including Ipswich Town Hall, the historic Christchurch Mansion, our unique Ipswich Museum, Fore Street Pool, and the Ipswich Regent Theatre, so we can’t wait to see what the community chooses to include in this iconic game which will be enjoyed for years to come.”
