Demolition of Diesco site in Ipswich paves the way for 26 new council homes

A former industrial site in Ipswich could be brought back to life with the construction of 26 new council homes.

Plans to demolish the former car repair shop Diesco in Gainsborough were submitted earlier this year.

This was done to make way for future social housing.

A council spokesperson said that demolition of the site at Hawke Road has 'just about finished' today.

However, planning application for the new homes has yet to be submitted.

Hanford Homes Ltd, a council-owned housing firm, was responsible for bringing the application to the planning authority.

Following public consultation, it is intended for the site to be used to build 20 two, three and four bedroom houses with gardens.

In addition, four one bedroom flats and two double bedroom flats, including one designed specifically for wheelchair access, are also being considered.

These will have communal gardens, dedicated parking, electric vehicle charging ports and include a play area for children.

Ipswich Borough Council bought the plot back in 2020, which includes the nearby recreation area.

Investigations and tests are being conducted on the site to help the plans gain consent.

Councillor Neil MacDonald said the houses fit in with the council's strategy on building more 'high quality and more energy-efficient housing'.

He said he was delighted to see the preliminary work done in advance of the submission of a detailed planning application.
