Travellers set up camp in Haverhill car park
A group of travellers has been given permission to stay in a Haverhill car park.
The travellers, who are believed to be Irish, were granted short term permission to park their caravans in the car park near the Cineworld in Ehrinhausen Way by St Edmundsbury Borough Council.
The travellers had been in Bury St Edmunds but were moved out of town in the early hours of Monday, May 4. The site in Haverhill was suggested as a short term measure and it is understood the travellers have agreed to leave the area by Thursday, May 7.
Haverhill councillor, Tony Brown, said: “They were moved out of Bury and, the next thing we heard, they were parking the caravans in Haverhill looking for places to park up.
“The borough council had a consultation with the police and it was decided that, rather than having them set up on a verge somewhere or on a green space in town, it would be better for everybody to have them there.”
The car park is still open to members of the public and the businesses and facilities in the area remain open as usual.
“Obviously, there will be some disruption,” added Cllr Brown. “It’s not ideal, but it’s a short term measure.”
