More than 150 people attended a garden party thrown by the High Sheriff of Suffolk, George Vestey, in recognition of their efforts as volunteers.

Monday’s event was held at Mr Vestey’s Thurlow Hall home , where certificates were given to all volunteers nominated while other guests included organisations, ONE Haverhill Partnership board members and supporters and local dignitaries.

It was held at the start of National Volunteers Week and entertainment was provided by the Haverhill Silver Band and catering from students at Castle Manor Academy

John Mayhew, chairman of ONE Haverhill Partnership, thanked Mr Vestey for hosting the party, adding: “We were delighted to have the opportunity to work with the High Sheriff of Suffolk to organise this fantastic celebration of volunteering in and around Haverhill.

“Our town is so fortunate to have amazing volunteers and this was an ideal way to celebrate all those achievements – as well as saying a big thank you.”

Mr Vestey said: “The purpose of the evening was to recognise, thank and celebrate the brilliant work of volunteers in the Haverhill area. As volunteers, they have all made such a positive impact in the community and I would like to thank every volunteer for what they do in so many different ways to help and support those in need.

“The definition of a healthy community is one where volunteering is thriving and it is something that provides a great sense of achievement and purpose.

“These volunteers are the unsung heroes of the town and we salute you all.”
