Haverhill Volunteer Centre set to open its own office for the first time

To coincide with National Volunteers Week, Haverhill Town Council will be opening its new volunteer centre at Haverhill Arts Centre.

The centre opens on Tuesday, June 1 in the media room at the arts centre and anyone who wishes to volunteer, or would like to use volunteers within their organisation, will be able to make an appointment to discuss the available opportunities.

Jill Moss, the Volunteer Centre manager said: "We are thrilled to have a place to call home after over a year of working remotely.

"Volunteer services are vital to community health and wellbeing now more than ever and so we would love to start meeting as many people as possible.

"There are so many benefits to volunteering from meeting new friends to learning new skills to keeping physically active and we have opportunities to suit almost everyone whatever the circumstances."

Haverhill had been without a volunteer centre for some years, ever since the previous one in Lower Downs Slade was closed.

The town council had been searching for a venue for the new centre, but Covid and other issues have delayed that happening.

n On Friday, June 4, Jill and her team will have a stall on the Market Square between 10am until around 2pm where anybody interested in volunteering can drop by and find out more and arrange to make an appointment for a more in-depth chat.

n The following day, June 5 sees the Volunteer Centre host a ‘thank you’ event all those who have been involved in their Good Neighbour Scheme.

The service, which was set up during the first coronavirus lockdown period, offered shopping and companionship to residents who were shielding and its success was reliant upon the dedication and commitment of a dedicated team of volunteers.

The 'thank you' event takes place at the Haven Café, next to the library on Camps Road between 10am and 12.30pm and volunteers' services will be rewarded with cake, tea and refreshments and a number of town councillors including the mayor, Liz Smith will be there to offer a personal note of thanks.
