New Mayor of Haverhill 'honoured' to take up the role

The new Mayor of Haverhill has spoken of his pride at being elected to the role.

Cllr Tony Brown was elected at the annual meeting of Haverhill Town Council on Tuesday, where he received the chain of office from his predecessor, Cllr David Roach. Cllr John Burns was named as the deputy mayor.

Cllr Brown, who has been the deputy mayor for the past 12 months, said: “I’ve lived here since 1961, when I was one year old, so I was brought up in the town and have spent most of my life here, apart from when I was in the Army and now I’m the mayor.

“I never thought that when I was little kid running around on the Parkway estate I would become mayor. It’s just a huge, huge honour.”

Cllr Brown, who runs his own business, AGB Drilling, and is a former Royal Engineer, was elected to Haverhill Town Council in 2015.

He has represented Haverhill East at St Edmundbury Borough Council since 2014.

He also served as a Suffolk county councillor, represented Haverhill East and Kedington from 2013 until 2017, when he stood down.

Cllr Brown has chosen Haverhill-based The Joshua Tarrant Trust as his mayoral charity for the year.

On Saturday, Haverhill Arts Centre will show the Royal wedding on its giant screen, with doors opening at 11am. People can take their own food but must buy drinks from the bar.

The arts centre will also be screening the FA Cup Final, which kicks off at 5.15pm.

The entire day is free, but is a fund-raiser for the Joshua Tarrant Trust so donations would be welcomed.
