New hedgehog story trail spikes interest at East Town Park, in Haverhill
A new hedgehog-themed story is ready for families to enjoy at the East Town Park story trail, in Haverhill.
On Tuesday Get Suffolk Reading refreshed the story, which has been created by the National Literacy Trust’s Suffolk campaign, behind the eight QR codes on display around the park.
The new tale follows five baby hedgehogs on their first visit to the park and includes activities to encourage conversation and creativity as families move along the route.
The digital story trail was first installed at East Town Park in October.
Scanning the QR codes in order reveals a story that is changed throughout the year.
Amanda Williams, project manager for Get Suffolk Reading in Haverhill, said: “We developed this trail for families to read in the park together, with questions on each page to encourage chat and observation, as well as space for children to create their own illustrations and bring a personal touch to the story.
“Spending time outdoors can have a hugely positive impact on the mental health of adults and children – and taking reading outdoors and into green spaces is a brilliant way to encourage reluctant readers and support literacy development.”
This is now the third story at East Town Park, following Link the Lizard and Nova’s Spring Mission, which were created by local literacy champion volunteers.
In March, a special storytelling chair was unveiled at the end of the trail, forming part of a storytelling circle so groups could gather for learning activities.
This summer’s story has also been made available to download in booklet form, which means it can be used at any outdoor space across Suffolk.
Families can download the East Town Park story trail map or the hedgehog story booklet on the Get Suffolk Reading website – getsuffolkreading.org.uk – and keep up to date with local activities through the Get Suffolk Reading Facebook page.
