New domestic abuse officer for Haverhill

Support will be on hand for victims of domestic abuse following the appointment of a new domestic abuse officer.

PC Lawrence Allen took up the post on June 8. He will be based at Haverhill police station as a first responder to incidences of domestic abuse and will be trained to offer support and advice to victims.

PC Allen has previously worked in Bury St Edmunds and Sudbury. He lived in Haverhill when he was young and has worked in the town.

“My role will be to promote continuity for domestic abuse victims and vulnerable people,” said PC Allen. “We have got a room dedicated at the station to make the environment a bit more supportive and relaxed.

“My job is to help people who are at medium risk and to stop them from becoming serious risks.”

PC Allen will undergo a six week training course in Bury St Edmunds’ victims care centre to prepare himself for the role, after which he will be on duty at the Haverhill station.

Inspector Peter Ferrie welcomed PC Allen to the station.

PC Allen will be involved in everything from resolving disputes to tackling mental and physical abuse.

“Most of my work will ne inter-familial or inter-relationship,” said PC Allen. “Domestic incidents are often not reported to the police. People will suffer multiple incidents before matters are reported. My role is to stop it continuing and to stop it from becoming a high risk situation. Over the years, it’s become a bit of a stigma. We want more people to be able to approach us to talk about domestic violence.”
