London man who was acting ‘suspiciously’ outside HMP Highpoint in Stradishall, near Haverhill, jailed in connection with drug offences




A 22-year-old man who was acting ‘suspiciously’ outside a Suffolk prison has been jailed for nearly five years in connection with drug offences.

Ali Abbas, of St Helens Place in London, was jailed for four years and nine months at Chelmsford Crown Court on Tuesday after pleading guilty.

It followed an incident in April 2023 when police received a call from prison staff at HMP Highpoint in Stradishall, near Haverhill.

Staff reported two males that had been spotted at the perimeter fence acting suspiciously and hiding in bushes.

On police arrival, two males were detained.

A carrier bag with numerous items of significance were found, such as tightly wrapped tobacco and cannabis as well as four iPhones, phone chargers and SIM cards.

Abbas was sentenced to three years and six months for drug possession and supplying heroin/cocaine and seven months for attempting to convey items into prison.

He was also given eight months imprisonment for the breach of a suspended sentence.
