Haverhill Rotarians celebrate a special anniversary and welcome new president
Haverhill & District Rotary Club held a dinner at Haverhill Golf Club to celebrate the 20th anniversary of its reformation while also marking the hand over of the presidency by Robin Harman to Terry McGerty.
The club was first formed in the early 1950s but folded in the early 1990s. In 1995 a few members of the old club got together and were instrumental in reforming the club which received its Rotary Charter in that year.
New president Mr McGerty’s two main objectives for the coming year are finding new members and fundraising.
The Club meets weekly at Haverhill Golf Club and welcomes new members both men and women. If anyone would like further information please contact Geoff Carter on 01440 702633.
In June the club raised £420 at the Magna Carta Festival in Clare and supported Rotary KidsOut day by taking 40 children to Wimpole Hall.
The club, which is particularly proud of its links with the town’s schools and the youth of Haverhill, manned a stall at the Magna Carta Festival selling raffle tickets for a balloon trip sponsored by David Rawlings of Haverhill PC Bureau and a hamper donated by club member David Wheeldon.
Rotary KidsOut Day started in 1990 on a very small scale but since then it has grown and in the intervening time a total of some 25000 disadvantaged children have enjoyed a fun day out with the help of Rotarians nationally.
Haverhill & District Rotary Club is part of a worldwide organisation founded in 1905 which has well over a million members in 160 countries.
Rotary Foundation is one of the world’s largest charities and it has for a long time had a worldwide impact in many areas.
Since 1985 Rotary has, with its global partners including the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, been involved in a campaign to rid the world of polio, a campaign which has very nearly succeeded although it has been marred by the recent troubles in the Middle East and parts of Asia where, in some cases, tragically, aid workers have lost their lives.
