FIRM HIT BY HOUSING SLUMP

The continuing slump in the housing market cost another 27 people their jobs at the Haverhill factory of Titon Components, makers of window and door fittings.

The bad news came just one week after about a dozen jobs were lost at computer company, Cyberaid.

Titon’s managing director told the Echo that the job losses were down to high interest rates and the general economic situation, which had seen a 35 per cent decline in the building industry in the first four months of the year.

PLANNERS SAY NO TO TWO CLUBS PROPOSALS

Two major entertainment proposals for Haverhill were blocked by St Edmundsbury Council’s planning committee.

Councillors turned down an application for a nightclub at McCues snooker club in Chalkstone Way and plans to extend the Haverhill Ex-Servicemen’s Club in Quakers Lane to form cabaret and sports rooms.

The nightclub was rejected because of the impact on local residents and the HESMC proposals refused because it was in an area zoned for possible redevelopment and had poor access and parking.
