Pupils in west Suffolk are being given the chance to have their say on the name of a new sixth form college to be built in Bury St Edmunds.

Suffolk Academies Trust, which stems from a collaboration between One Sixth Form College, in Ipswich, and West Suffolk College, was given the go-ahead for a new multi-million pound sixth form college by the Department for Education last year.

The site and the opening date are yet to be confirmed, but the trust is keen to establish a name for the college, which will start with 500 students and rise to 1,700 by its fifth year.

The trust has already started talking to pupils in Bury and they will also speak to schools in other towns in west Suffolk.

Michelle Hughes, assistant principal of One is leading the naming consultation.

She said: “This is a significant and very exciting project for Bury St Edmunds that will transform the educational opportunities for young people across west Suffolk.

“We want the young people across the region to have a real input into the name of the Sixth Form that will be there for them and many generations to come.”

Dr Nikos Savvas, chief executive of Suffolk Academies Trust, said: “This is the next step in a brilliant project.

“Plans for the new sixth form college are coming on really well and it’s time to get young people and the people living in west Suffolk involved. We will be offering 16 to 19 year-olds in this region more than 40 high quality A-level courses.

“It is great that they can be involved by coming up with suggestions for a name.”

The trust has also set up an online survey so that residents in Bury and the surrounding area can make their own suggestions for a name.
