Armed forces day 2016 to be bigger and better in Haverhill

The armed forces will recognised with music and a military parade next year, following a unanimous decision by councillors.

At a meeting of the town council’s Leisure and Community Committee on Monday, July 6, councillors agreed that more would be done to make Armed Forces Day 2016 a bigger occasion in the town.

After a relatively small turn out for the 2015 event, which was held on June 22, councillors agreed that more needed to be done to mark the event next year.

“It’s important for young people,” said Councillor Tony Brown. “We are committed to it as a town. We will have a much bigger event next year.

“A lot of the things the armed forces do go unsung. A lot of blood, sweat and tears go into the job. They’re not always well paid either.

“It’s important, not only for those serving, but for their families or service personnel. They go the extra mile as well.

“Britain always shows appreciation for its armed forces. It’s good we can do that too.”

The town council is currently looking for ideas to make next year’s event more of an occasion. There are hopes of a parade of cadets for a ceremonial flag raising, music and marching bands in the Market Square and a display of military vehicles. The event will also be held on a Saturday to ensure as many people as possible are able to attend.

Brian Mills, chairman of the Royal British Legion in Haverhill, welcomed the council’s unity on the issue.

He said: “A lot of places have a proper event. It should be a celebration of the armed forces in this country.

“You look at the freedom we have got in this country. It’s because of the work of the armed forces. They need to be recognised for what they have done for us as a nation.”
