Haverhill street closed after "unknown liquid substance" squirted into man's face

Police, firefighters and the ambulance service were called to a normally quiet Haverhill street after a man had an unknown liquid squirted into his face.

Despite concerns being raised that the substance was potentially dangerous, it later transpired that it was probably just lemon juice.

A Suffolk Police spokesman said officers were called by the ambulance service to Hazel Close shortly after 4.05pm yesterday following reports that a man had been assaulted by an unknown offender squirting an "unknown liquid substance" into his face while he was walking in the cul-de-sac.

Three fire appliances from Haverhill and one from Long Melford also attended.

The spokesman added: "An ambulance attended and the male was taken to hospital for treatment after he sustained a minor injury to his face.

"The opinion of medical staff at the hospital was that the liquid thrown was lemon juice (or something similar) and so there is no lasting injury.”
