Bury Town remain level with Isthmian League North Division leaders Felixstowe & Walton after win at Witham Town
Bury Town remain second on goal difference in the Isthmian League North Division following their 4-1 win away at Witham Town last weekend.
It is now three victories in a row for Cole Skuse’s men, who are 10 goals worse off than league-leading Felixstowe & Walton United, with both sides having played 31 games.
It took the visiting Blues 15 minutes to break the deadlock at Witham courtesy of Dylan Williams’ first goal for the club.
Luke Brown was the creator, winning the ball back inside the Witham box before picking out recent arrival Williams to find the back of the net.
And in the 29th minute Brown turned scorer when he fired low past Witham goalkeeper Harry Fairs to register his eighth league goal of the campaign.
Two substitutions early in the second half breathed some life into Witham’s attacking play and they went close through Archie McFadden, who fired in an effort that was saved by Bury goalkeeper Charlie Beckwith.
Tyler Forbes then saw a shot whistle past the post before Tom Stagg halved Witham’s deficit with a 54th-minute free-kick that flew into the top corner.
Witham continued in the ascendancy and they would have equalised but for the performance of Beckwith, who was at his best to keep out substitute Sunny Dunton and McFadden.
Those two stops proved to be crucial because with 17 minutes remaining Bury’s two-goal advantage was restored courtesy of Mikey Davis’ driven effort.
The points were then made safe in the second minute of time added-on when Ipswich Town loanee Jamie Mauge picked out fellow substitute Ed Upson inside the box and he made no mistake with the finish.
Elsewhere, Felixstowe’s 2-1 win over Tilbury has seen them retain their grip on top spot but third-placed Brentwood Town have fallen four points behind the Suffolk pair following their 1-0 defeat away at Waltham Abbey.
Bury will go in search of a fourth win on the bounce tomorrow when they play host to 10th-placed Heybridge Swifts (3pm).
Bury won October’s reverse fixture between the two sides in October 1-0 courtesy of goal from Brown.
In the same division, it is back-to-back defeats for Mildenhall Town after they lost 2-0 at home to Walthamstow.
Fourteenth-placed Mildenhall, who are 10 points above the relegation zone, travel to face Tilbury tomorrow (3pm).
