Walsham-le-Willows follow back-to-back wins with a defeat to Norwich United in the Thurlow Nunn League Premier Division
Walsham-le-Willows had posted back-to-back victories in the Thurlow Nunn League Premier Division but that sequence was ended on Saturday by Norwich United, who ran out 2-0 winners at Plantation Park.
Neither side managed to find the net during the first half but the deadlock was eventually broken nine minutes after the restart.
Recent signing from higher-league Lowestoft Town Ben Fowkes was the scorer, lobbing the ball over Walsham goalkeeper Dan Stobbart.
And Norwich, who had scored 10 goals in their previous two outings, made sure of the outcome in the 69th minute when Liam Jackson fired in Norwich City loanee Finlay Barnes’ pass.
It could have got even worse for Walsham late on when Fowkes netted again, but on this occasion his celebrations were cut short by the offside flag.
Despite the defeat Walsham remain fifth in the table, though the gap to fourth-placed Stowmarket Town, who have a game in hand, has grown to six points.
Trevor Newman’s team will look to bounce back when they host relegation-threatened Ely City tomorrow (3pm).
The Cambridgeshire-based Robins head into the encounter having picked up two points from the last 12 on offer, and are only outside of the relegation zone on goal difference.
The reverse meeting between the two sides saw Walsham win 3-0, thanks to goals from Jack Brame, Lee Sim and Kehan Whitby.
- Shaun Avis continued his positive of run of form for Lakenheath since arriving from Newmarket Town with another goal in Saturday’s 3-2 win at Leiston Reserves.
The centre-forward, who missed the 2-1 defeat to Fakenham Town last time out, took his tally to eight goals in just three appearances for Ben Cowling’s team.
However, it was winger Kelvin Enaro who put the visitors in front at the Victory Ground, scoring in the 44th minute to take his tally for the campaign to 24 from 37 outings.
Avis added his name to the scoresheet nine minutes after the restart to extend Lakenheath’s lead.
The striker had a spell with Lakenheath when he was first breaking into senior football and found the net on eight occasions from 60 appearances – the same number of goals he has scored since his return to the club last month.
Leiston’s second string got themselves back into the contest via an Owen Hammond penalty six minutes from time, but Lakenheath regained control of proceedings thanks to Aaron Turner’s 18th goal of the campaign in the 88th minute.
The home team scored again within 60 seconds through Michael Carrigan, but that was to be the end of the scoring as Lakenheath bounced back at the first time of asking from that loss to Fakenham on March 15.
Fifth-placed Lakenheath will get back to action on Saturday when they travel to Bloomfields to take on third-from-bottom Needham Market Reserves (3pm).
Heath were 3-2 winners in September’s reverse fixture when Reece Clarke, Jack Gould and David Wilson were all on target.
Ethan Abrahams and Daniel Hayes netted for the Marketmen on that occasion, who sit in 17th place in the First Division North table.
After going on a four match winning run, Needham have now lost their last two after a 4-1 defeat to Swaffham Town was followed by a 1-0 reverse at Diss Town this past weekend.
