Teemu Pukki's form keeping Norwich City on course for promotion back to the Premier League

With Teemu Pukki on this kind of form, Norwich City are going to take some stopping in the Championship promotion race.

The Finn made it six goals in four games with a brace against Birmingham City on Tuesday – increasing his tally for the season to 17 in the process.

It was far from a ripsnorting display from Daniel Farke’s side on their second trip to St Andrews in a week but at this stage of the campaign, coming home with three points is all that matters. And we have our talismanic striker to thank for that.

By his own high standards, Teemu has had something of a steady season. Eleven goals in his first 24 games represented a decent if unspectacular return for a striker of his ability.

But in the last few weeks, the 30-year-old has exploded into life and is displaying the same level of ruthlessness which underpinned his first season at the club, when he helped himself to 29 goals en route to the division’s player of the season award.

The first against Birmingham, in particular, was vintage Pukki, latching on to a through ball by Kenny McLean before firing across the keeper and into the far corner.

Pukki’s brace – along with a first senior goal from the ever-impressive Oliver Skipp (more on him to come in the next few weeks) – were enough to secure a fourth straight win for the Canaries, a run which puts us in a strong position heading into the business end of the season.

Our tally of 67 points from 32 games is actually seven more than at the same stage of the 2018/19 season – when of course we went on to end the season with 94 points.

I’m cautious when it comes to predicting how many more are still required this time round, but what I will say is that if we can keep on the two points a game average we will end the season as champions.

Eight wins and a draw are needed to reach that target.
