Norwich City produced best performance of my lifetime during Huddersfield Town thrashing

Just when you think Norwich City couldn’t raise the bar any higher in this extraordinary campaign, along comes a breathtaking result like Tuesday night.

I’m going to stick my neck out and say the 7-0 demolition of Huddersfield is the most complete performance I have witnessed – not just this season, but in more than two decades of watching City.

Of course, there have been more famous and important victories but in terms of quality, control and sheer ruthlessness, this display was on a whole different level.

Particularly during a relentless opening 45 minutes, when Huddersfield simply could not live with the movement, intelligence and link-up between Emi Buendia, Todd Cantwell and Kieran Dowell – all of whom added their names to the scoresheet following an early brace from Teemu Pukki.

The second half was slightly less ferocious from City, but two further goals – Pukki completing his hat-trick – was enough to ensure a biggest league win in nearly 70 years.

Without trying to put a dampener on things, the only shame is that there were no fans inside Carrow Road to enjoy such a magnificent performance. It really would have been a special evening.

Throughout this season, I’ve tried not to bring the Covid situation into this column but with the League Cup final set to host 8,000 fans – and other pilot events taking place – there must now be genuine optimism that fans can return ready for the start of the 2021/22 Premier League season.

Please note I said the Premier League season, because that is exactly where Daniel Farke’s side are heading – and deservedly so.

Mathematically we still need another five points to secure promotion, but realistically, the job is all but done. In fact, promotion could be sealed this weekend if we win at Derby and both the Bees and Swansea fail to pick up three points.

The champagne is on ice – so enjoy it City fans!
