Bury Town assistant manager Paul Musgrove aims to raise £4,500 for The Lord’s Taverners in London Marathon

An assistant football manager is gearing up for his second marathon challenge to raise money for a good cause.

Bury Town assistant manager Paul ‘Muzzy’ Musgrove, 42, of Stanton, is taking on the London Marathon on April 21 with his friends Darren Chessum and James Yeandle to raise funds for The Lord's Taverners.

The charity helps disabled young people get into sports and empowers them to overcome the challenges they face.

Paul, of Stanton, said: “I’m incredibly nervous but also really excited to be doing another marathon.

“We have been running through different villages around Suffolk and we keep finding new routes to keep it fresh.

“It’s always around the 16-mile mark where you start questioning your life decisions a little bit – but you have to focus on why you’re doing it and just keep going.

“As soon as it starts getting hard and I want to stop, that’s when I’ll be thinking about all those people who are less fortunate and I remember to be thankful that I can go out for a run.”

Last year, Paul ran the Manchester Marathon to raise funds for Elodie Waugh, of Walsham-le-Willows, who was diagnosed with the rare blood condition aplastic anaemia at the age of four.

He raised more than £6,000 for Elodie and her family who used the money to purchase a caravan, lovingly named 'The Musgrove Suite', intended to create memories for the entire family.

Paul said Elodie's condition has significantly improved and, while she may still face some medical issues, her health has been steadily getting better.

“It’s brilliant news,” he said. “They’ve had so many dark moments to go through as a family, but it’s so lovely to see them enjoying the caravan now.

“They were waiting for the right moment to spend the money and it feels amazing to have been a part of that.”

Paul, who is the former boss of Stowmarket Town, met his fellow runners, Darren and James, after they invited him to come for a run while he was gardening.

Since then they have built up a strong friendship and all raised money for separate causes during last year’s Manchester Marathon.

They are now teaming up and combining their fund-raising efforts with a target of £4,500 for The Lord's Taverners.

Paul added: “I really hope we can reach our target to give the children a good start in sports.

“Only two weeks to go now so it’s all about that final push.”
