West Suffolk Scouts gather for St George’s Day service
Scouts from all over west Suffolk held their annual St George’s Day service and parade at St Mary’s Church, Bury St Edmunds, on Sunday.
Hundreds of scouts, guides and brownies, along with bands from Bury Sea Cadets, RAF Honington and Stowmarket and Fourth Mid Suffolk Boys’ Brigade, gathered in the Abbey Gardens before the parade marched into Angel Hill towards the church for a service conducted by the Rev Malcolm Rogers.
All ages took part from the youngest Beavers to teenaged Venture Scouts. The colour party was made up of scouts from Mildenhall and Bury’s first and sixth units, escorted by cubs from Thurston, Red Lodge and Horringer.
After the service, the scouts renewed their promise and then the parade left St Mary’s via Honey Hill to return to the Abbey Gardens.
On the way, their salute was taken on Angel Hill by St Edmundsbury Mayor Patrick Chung with scouting’s county and district commissioners.
