Sicklesmere Road resident in Bury St Edmunds calls for safety measures to improve visibility along key route as he fears accident waiting to happen
A resident has called for safety measures to improve visibility on a key route as he fears a serious accident is waiting to happen.
Residents on the A134 Sicklesmere Road in Bury St Edmunds say they are experiencing dangerous risks while leaving their driveways into queues of vehicles due to traffic controls in place.
After managing to get onto the A134, residents are struggling to join the other side of the road as they are completely blind to oncoming traffic as a result of the tailbacks.
A resident said there have been intermittent traffic measures along the route since May last year as different utilities have been put in place to start connecting the Abbots Vale housing development.
He has asked for convex mirrors opposite the entrances of all the homes along the road so his neighbours can have a better view of oncoming traffic.
“We are seriously worried for our safety every time we have to negotiate stationary traffic blind with zero visibility for oncoming vehicles,” he said.
“I can blast my car horn and flash my lights but it doesn’t reduce the risk. My wife and I have been nearly hit before on separate occasions and people down the road have had near misses.
“I even saw a car get hit so there isn’t some vague possibility of a crash here, it's already happening and it won’t be long before a very serious collision does happen.
“We are seriously concerned and frustrated that it appears to be completely down to us residents to persist with trying to protect our life and property. I just don’t want people to get hurt.”
The resident said that he has raised concerns about the issue to Suffolk Highways and asked Suffolk County Council for some risk assessment, but has not been left satisfied with their response.
Suffolk Highways has been approached for comment.
A series of weekend closures for Sicklesmere Road have been planned until May 5, with temporary traffic lights in operation, due to work by Hopkins Homes to construct a roundabout as part of Abbots Vale.
