'We are closing on a very happy and proud note': Bury St Edmunds-based charity GeeWizz bows out with farewell event
The ‘Farewell Gathering’ of a Bury St Edmunds-based charity which has raised more than £2million and helped countless families and individuals during its time took place yesterday.
The GeeWizz event, at Milsoms Kesgrave Hall, celebrated the charitable foundation founded by Gina Long in 2015.
The High Sheriff of Suffolk, Mark Pendlington, presented Gina on the night with his first award in recognition of her achievements in delivering life-enhancing projects and equipment for children and young people, across Suffolk.
“Gina Long has been the inspiration behind GeeWizz for over seven years, and with her amazing team has transformed the lives of so many people who would otherwise not have received the help and support they richly deserve.” he said.
“Her legacy will be recognised and celebrated for many years to come. The High Sheriff’s Award, which has been my very great pleasure to present, is a token of deepest gratitude for her remarkable work and all that she has achieved.”
Over the years, Gina has raised more than £7million for various charities including Breakthrough Breast Cancer, Sarcoma UK and The Sir Bobby Robson Foundation, which includes £2 million with GeeWizz.
Speaking at the event, Gina said: “I am deeply humbled and honoured to receive the award, which I proudly accept on behalf of the GeeWizz team, trustees and our families, who add such richness to life.
“It is for them that I accept this very special award. We are closing GeeWizz on a very happy and proud note, reflecting upon the legacy and the impact of this very special, small charity.”
Whilst in semi-retirement, Gina will continue to be very active in her role as a fundraiser, campaigner and mentor to benefit the community, as a patron of Suffolk Libraries and Ipswich Suffolk Business Club, as well as being Ambassador for West Suffolk Colleges, St Edmundsbury Cathedral and The Theatre Royal Bury St Edmunds.
Gina finally said: “I have never ceased to be truly overwhelmed by the generosity of all of the individuals and companies who so readily gave their support in abundance”
"There are so many happy memories, too numerous to mention. I feel truly overwhelmed by the presence and the love of so many GeeWizz families and supporters here tonight.”
Funding for projects that GeeWizz has committed to support in 2023-24 will be honoured.
