Mr Kebab, in Ixworth, to open as usual today despite devastating van fire last night
A kebab van stationed at the entrance to a Suffolk village will stay open despite a devastating fire last night.
The Mr Kebab van, in a layby in Bury Road, Ixworth, near Bury St Edmunds, caught fire at 11.09pm, with a fire crew from the village attending the blaze.
A Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said the van was ‘well alight’ when the crew arrived, with firefighters using breathing apparatus and hose reels while putting out the fire, as well as using thermal imaging cameras to check for hot spots.
The incident was dealt with by 12.18am.
Today, a spokesperson for Mr Kebab said the takeaway would open as usual this evening as the kebab trailer itself was not affected, only the van parked next to it.
The spokesperson said: “It happened when the van was opened last night. The generator caught on fire inside the van – it was an accident.”
They added that the burned-out vehicle would be cleared today.
There was previously another fire at the site in September.
Mr Kebab has been trading from the layby since early 2017. An application for a lawful development certificant for the provision of hot food and drink from a mobile van at the site was refused by West Suffolk Council in 2018, following a significant neighbour response.
