Vigil in Bury St Edmunds honours victims of Paris attacks

A silent vigil was held in Bury St Edmunds on Saturday to show respect for and unity with the victims of last week’s shootings in Paris.

Organised by local people in less than 24 hours, the gathering was an opportunity to express solidarity with the people of France following the terror attacks which saw gunmen murder 12 people at the offices of magazine Charlie Hebdo and five others in subsequent attacks. Up to 70 people joined the vigil outside the Apex holding candles, posters and white roses which were later laid on the war memorial on Angel Hill.

Alex Whiteman, from the local Amnesty International Group, said: “It was an incredibly moving sight, with people from all walks of life coming to pay their respects. It was especially moving to see members of the public decide to take time out from their shopping and join us for a quiet moment.”
